Up and Comer Tyler Reddick Debuts in a Late Model
Becomes youngest Driver to make a World of Outlaws Late Model Feature
Tyler Reddick prepares to make his first heat run in the World of Outlaws Late Model Series |
On February 12, 2009 young Tyler Reddick stunned a packed Florida crowd by racing his way into the first feature of the 2009 WoO Late Model Season at Volusia Speedway Park. In the process he made WoO history by becoming the youngest driver to ever make a feature. Adding to the importance of the tremendous feat was the fact that he did it in his first attempt in WoO competition.
Tyler bested 50 other Late Model racers by posting an 11th place qualifying run to place himself on the outside pole of his heat. At the start of the heat race Tyler had to make some evasive maneuvers to avoid a collision and was shuffled back to 5th place. After a yellow flag, Tyler quickly realized he needed to pick up 2 positions to make the feature. He made quick work of the 4th place driver and immediately went to work on the 3rd place car of Late Model hot shoe Jordan Bland. Getting by Bland, who was coming off of a very successful 2008 Late Model season, for the transfer spot was not going to be an easy task. But by drawing upon his smooth and patient driving style he was able to seize the opportunity for the transfer position. Once he was solidly in the third position there was no looking back as he hit every mark and clinched a feature run.
Prior to his run on that warm Florida night in WoO competition Tyler had less than 2 weeks worth of experience in a Late Model. What the folks packing the Volusia Speedway grandstands may not have realized was that they were witnessing a lightning fast assimilation from a career in open wheel dirt race cars to a much heavier race car. It is his knack for being able to adjust to any type of racing situation that makes Tyler one of the more talented young drivers to keep an eye on. In 2008 Tyler had similarly adjusted to another form of racing when he made the jump from a Micro Sprint to a 410 wingless sprint. In less than 4 months of racing the 410 sprinter Tyler managed to pull off some heat wins and additional feature starts. He capped his 2008 season by beating out more than 20 different sprint car veterans to make a feature start at Kokomo Speedway in central Indiana.
