Brent Marks Proves Consistency is Key to PA Speedweeks Championship
Pennsylvania 600 Sprint driver Brent Marks was one of only two drivers to compete in every Speed Week event this year. With an average finish of 8th in all 6 events he used his consistency to take home the championship in 2008. Although the young up and comer didn’t win any of the events he pulled off 1 top 5 and 5 top 10 finishes.
After the rain delay at Trail-Way Speedway Brent went into Lincoln Speedway and brought home a 3rd place finish, his best finish of the week. The following night at Path Valley Brent raced his way to a 7th place finish. The rained out event at Trail-Way Speedway resumed on Tuesday night and Brent came home in 6th place. The drivers traveled north for the race at Greenwood Valley Speedway where Brent finished in the 8th position. Back south to Susquehanna Speedway on Thursday night awarded Marks with a 10th place finishing position. The teams got a slight break Friday night when rain drenched the Linda’s Speedway. The race had to be cancelled. The $10,000 to win championship race at Lanco Speedway was Saturday and Brent wrapped up his championship bid with a 13th place finish.
Brent’s strongest competition for the championship all missed 1 race apiece. Mike Dicely battled for the championship all week but missed the race at Lanco. Dicely competed in 5 events and scored a win, 3 top 5 and 4 top 10 finishes. Mike had a strong average finish of 8th but missing the final race proved fatal for his chances at the championship. The 2nd place point’s finisher, Ben Murphy missed the event at Lincoln Speedway. In his 5 other starts for the week Ben pulled off 1 win and 3 top 5’s with an average finish of 8th. Ben’s brother, Jake Murphy, pulled off 2 victories in the series but missed 2 events, which kept him from the points battle. The highest finishing “outsider” for the week was Scott Sawyer. Sawyer traveled from Broken Arrow, OK to compete in the PA 600 Speedweek. Scott was fast all week long but missing the race at Greenwood Valley hurt his chances for the championship. In the 5 races he competed in Scott had 2 top 5 and 3 top 10 finishes with and average finish of 9th. The only other driver to make all 6 events for the week was Shane Lewis. Lewis ended up 5th in the point standings with 1 top 5 and 2 top 10 finishes. Lewis had an average finishing position of 13th for the week. |
