Joey King Wins World Cup 2008

8/31/2008 (Cedar Rapids, IA)
The fans in Odessa, MO at the I-70 Speedway saw quite an impressive performance from Silvis, Illinois’ Joey King. King used the inversion of the top 6 qualifiers to put his Adrian Carriers, Gett Industries, Dan Ash Trucking Chevrolet on the pole and lead from wire to wire to capture his first victory of the 2008 season in the World Cup 100.

King took off from the drop of the green flag at I-70 and began to boast an impressive lead through the first portion of the 100 lap affair. Early caution flags mired the beginning of the event, however, keeping the field within striking distance of King‘s machine. Third place driver Joey Eggleston hit the turn four concrete hard and was one of numerous front runners to find trouble in the early going. Jack Smith, while running second, saw his night spoiled by mechanical issues as well as point leader Eddie Hoffman.

Trent Snyder, the fastest qualifier, looked to be one of the only cars that could contend with King’s Chevrolet. Snyder spun and made a hard impact with the outside wall on lap fourteen which ended his promising night. Jesse Saunders worked his way through the field, despite an incident with Billy Crane. Saunders was King’s biggest threat in the first half of the event but had to contend with Michael Pickens as well.
Pickens came from the eleventh starting position and methodically worked his way into the top five by lap thirty. Patiently biding his time, Pickens began to be more of a threat as the event wore on. A green flag run encompassing the final fifty eight laps of the World Cup 100 worked to Pickens’ advantage as he gave King as much as he could handle for the top spot. In the end, King’s #29 was too much for Pickens’ and his impressive charge through the field. King fended off a late race charge from Pickens to pick up his first win of ‘08.

“I knew we had a really good car all day” Pickens said . “I was really worried about (Saunders and Pickens) behind me in lapped traffic.”
King will try and finish the ASALMS North season by visiting victory lane in Lacrosse, Wisconsin on October 4th.
